As a result of the number of Christians receiving Communion at each Mass, you, the Eucharistic Ministers, have become an indespensable part of the Liturgical Ministries. Without your participation, the Communion portion of the Mass would be unduly prolonged. Your ministry also makes it practical to take communion to the home-bound and those in care centers and hospitals. This ministry is not for everyone. As stated in The Rite of Commissioning Special Ministers of Holy Communion, "In this ministry, you must be examples of Christian living in faith and conduct; you must strive to grow in holiness through this sacrament of unity and love. Remember that, though many, we are one body because we share the one bread and one cup."
